This Month's Issue:

PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS

The Irish Business Organization is living up to its promise of delivering business and social networking events. In the month of April we had a great monthly meeting and a tremendous social event “Taste of Ireland”. Irish networking and socializing can not be beat and no one does it better than the IBO. If you did not participate you missed a fantastic opportunity to meet and greet other members and friends of our organization.

Our membership meeting featured John Cullinane, a very successful entrepreneur, who spoke to us about his family life growing up in Massachusetts, business career, and marketing. He spent time talking to us about a Position Statement for a business and why it is as important to have as a mission statement. We thank John for taking time out of his busy schedule to speak to us and giving us some additional insight for success.

Our member speakers for the month also gave us great insight into their growing ventures. Our member speakers were Michael Christian with Patient Advocate Solutions and Dennis O’Neil with Beacon Consulting Group, Inc.

Our social event “Taste of Ireland” was a huge success and yes it was sold out. Clare Bennett and Simon Periera Shorey entertained the room with individual renditions of songs that were sure to make your heart dance with delight. Our own Niall O’Leary and his band had our hands clapping and feet stomping to a great selection of Irish music and song. Featured member Colleen O’Connor, a certified Irish dance-instructor, led members in a number of Irish Set Dances. A special thank you to Frank Dwyer and Playwrights for being our host for the evening. A very special thank you to Clare Bennett, our administrator, for organizing the night and giving us all a very special “Taste of Ireland”.

The May membership meeting promises to be another unique meeting with our featured speaker Andy Cooney. Andy has been entertaining the Irish community for many years and will speak to us about the business side of entertaining and if we are lucky maybe sing a song or two. Colleen O’Connor, with the Executive Communications Group, will speak to us about public speaking and help us avoid some of the pitfalls we fall into.

Please keep in mind the following events:

  1. 1. The sixth annual IBO trade show on June 23rd at the South Gate Hotel. Look for the article inside. We are still accepting vendors and sponsors. Please call Jim McGuire, chairman, for details at 212-675-6565 x 113.
  2. 2. The annual golf outing on July 11th at TwinBrooks golf course in Watchung NJ. Please call John Doolan, chairman, to book foursomes and sponsorships at 908-709-1550.

I look forward to seeing everyone at our May 11th meeting. The meeting is held in O’Reillys on 31st between 6th and Broadway.

Please remember to think of your fellow members and pass along leads and introductions to other businesses.

Pat Sheridan
President, IBO-NY

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE IBO'S APRIL MEETING

Our featured speaker for April was John Cullinane, Chairman of the Board of Live Data, Inc, and author of the book "An Entrepreneur's Survival Guide." Mr. Cullinane's first company, Cullinet Software, Inc. was the first software company to go public on the New York Stock Exchange and reach a valuation of $1-billion.

Cullinet was later purchased by one of the world's largest software companies, Computer Associates, Inc. Mr. Cullinane’s book is a useful guide for entrepreneurs and executives and covers many of the trials, tribulations, and lessons learned during his exceptional career. Mr. Cullinane also has had extensive experience applying economic development (and job growth) to help foster peace in Ireland and elsewhere.

Member Profiles for April:

Dennis O'Neill, CEO - Beacon Consulting Group, Inc. is a full service construction consulting and construction management firm specializing in the surety claims industry. Beacon has offices in New York and Boston from which they provide services nationally to clients. Beacon specializes in consulting for surety companies, providing a variety of services geared towards assessing, investigating and completing construction projects in the most expedient and efficient manner possible. Beacon's staff includes engineers, estimators, and construction management professionals.

Michael Christian, President - Patient Advocate Solutions, Inc. provides services to help patients and their families deal with the complexities of our modern healthcare system. Caregiving for aging parents, special needs children or a critically ill spouse coupled with career and family obligations stresses caregivers to the edge. Workplace productivity suffers as caregiving obligations usurp work and career aspirations. With 25% of all employees burdened with caregiving duties, this is rapidly becoming the "daycare issue" of our age and one that impacts every employer. The PAS, Inc. program includes health insurance claim resolution, alternative funding research, medical fee negotiation, and senior-care resources.
