PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS

A Message From Attracta Lyndon,
IBO President, 2006

A Cara,

So much is going on that I am delighted to share with you. It gives me such great pride and pleasure to see how we as an organization are banding together to support each other and other Irish businesses. What an honor it is to work with you.

At our April meeting, Niall O’Dowd spoke to us about the Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform. I was pleased to present two checks to Niall for the ILIR program generously donated by the IBO and Dooley Car Rentals. Chris Reardon presented his member profile and we were delighted to have Chris come in from New Jersey to talk to us.

Our May 10th meeting is going to be of great interest. Professor Joe Lee of Glucksman Ireland House will speak to the group on one of his favorite topics – the 1916 Rising. Seamus Kelleher of Blackthorn will be our Member Profile and will talk to us about his career and exciting new CD, which has received great reviews.

On Friday, June 2nd, to my great delight, we will host our Annual Golf Outing at the Irish Links at Union Vale. As you know the mission of the IBO is to promote, foster and advance the business needs of the Irish and Irish Americans in our Tri-State area. The Irish Links is the only Irish owned golf course in the United States. In addition, it is a Links-style course, a popular style of golf at home in Ireland and will meet the needs of the more novice golfer as well as challenge the more experienced golfer.

My personal plea to all of you out there is to support this outing in whatever way you can – playing on the day, pulling together a foursome, attending the dinner, sponsoring a hole or taking advantage of our other sponsorship opportunities, donating a prize or items for our giveaway bags, raffle, etc. On behalf of the IBO Executive Committee, Golf Committee and Membership I’d like to thank those companies who have taken sponsorships to date. Liffey Van Lines is sponsoring the Hole-in-One and Luncheon, and our hole sponsors so far are: Dooley Car Rentals, Lismore Travel, Tully Travel, Aaries Pyramid, and Irish Links.

In addition to the golf, IBO Vice President, Garret Corcoran, has arranged some generous accommodation rates at his luxury hotel, TROUTBECK, and the Poughkeepsie Grand for the night before and/or the night of the golf outing. I know some of you will want to take advantage of these great rates for an overnight or extended stay. Details on all of these activities will be forthcoming shortly and available on our web site.

The breakfast meetings are a big hit and continue to grow each month. Niall O’Leary has organized a good selection of speakers that have been well received and continues to search for future speakers.

I paid a visit to our New Jersey contingent at their last meeting and received a warm welcome. Remember ladies and gentlemen, you don’t need a VISA to enter New York from New Jersey, so we’d love to see you at the New York meetings and events and invite you to present a member profile – so many of us that attend the New York meetings live in New Jersey and would love to hear of your businesses.

In closing, I’d like to recognize two long-time members who passed away recently. We lost Allan Cullen in February and, just this week, Bill Buckley lost his battle with cancer. Allan and Bill will be sorely missed by all of us. Their dedication and hard work contributed greatly to the success of the IBO. They were both true gentlemen at all times even in the face of adversity and their loyalty and support exemplify the greatness of this organization. May they Rest in Peace.

Glucksman Ireland House welcomed Professor Lee as its new Director at the beginning of Fall 2002, where he is deeply involved in a research project, jointly with researchers in Dublin, on the prospects of the Irish economy.

Member Profile (May 2006):

Seamus Kelleher
Musician (long-time member of the well-known band "Blackthorn"), Writer, and Business Consultant.

Seamus Kelleher left his hometown of Galway over thirty years ago to pursue a career in music. The youngest of five, Seamus started playing music when he was nine years old and began his professional career when he was just fourteen.

Upon his arrival in New York, he played with various bands around the New York area and studied classical guitar at the prestigious Mannes Conservatory Of Music. He went on to complete a degree in music education at Montclair State University. After teaching elementary school for a few years, Seamus decided to shift gears and study communications at New York University. He got his Master degree in 1989 and went on to work in the corporate world with companies such as EDS and Sapient. After 9/11 he took a break from the corporate world to spend some time with his young family while pursuing his passion for teaching. For the past five years he has been an adjunct professor in the journalism department of NYU and the communication Department of Fordham University.

The music business has taken Seamus from Carnegie Hall in New York to the streets of Prague in the Czech Republic. Seamus continues to play 80 shows a year with his band Blackthorn. In 2002, Seamus produced a show at New York’s Bottom Line to celebrate the life and music of legendary Irish guitar player, Rory Gallagher.
