PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS,
James Doran
As
we conclude our summer holidays and continue to recover from the Blackout
of '03, you should know that your Executive Committee has been hard
at work developing Fall programming for the organization. First, let
me recognize Shiela Lynott, Eileen Collins and Clare Bennett for the
outstanding job they did in organizing the end of Summer barbeque at
the Hudson Beach Cafe. It was truly a lovely evening--with great food
and very special entertainment by singer/songwriter Enda Keegan.
The Fall programming will commence on Sept. 10th
at our regular monthly meeting. Ms Trina Vargo, President of the
US-Ireland Alliance will be our guest speaker. In October, Ms.
Elizabeth Rose Daly, Director, Division for International Business,
City of New York will be our guest speaker. Also in October, we
will have a joint meeting with several other organizations and jointly
sponsor IBO member Paul Sullivan as Michael Collins.
The highlight of our 2003 season will take place on
October 24th--the IBO Gala Ball. More details are in
this newsletter, but know that we will be honoring three major contributors
to the tri-state area. Sister Mary Rose McGeady of Covenant House,
the FDNY Emerald Society Pipes and Drums, and, of course, our own Sara
Jones - IBO Business Member of the Year. We encourage all members
and friends to actively sponsor and attend what we believe is the best
charity dinner in the tri-state area. You can call the IBO office for
further details.

NOLAN'S
NOTIONS
September 2003
Let me be the first to tell you! If you
were not in Ireland in the past 5 weeks, too bad, you missed the single
best summer they have had in 20 years. Beautiful blue skies, shimmering
seas, beaming, though sunburned Irish faces and glistening pints of
cool liquid refreshment all contributed to the Summer of 2003 in Ireland.
The Euro may be hot, but the beach at Salthill was hotter still. This
global warming might just have a silver lining for Ireland, a truly
wondrous place when the sun shines!
Hey, relax, it's summer, and that’s
mostly good, save for those of us who take a trip and lose our wallets,
or pocketbooks, or get mugged, stupid, or inebriated and end up 'losing'
our personal effects somehow...and other than the old reliable American
Express traveler checks..(does anyone use them any more?), and making
sure you have several hundred dollar bills in ones socks, bras or
other intimate places, here’s some really solid advice I wish
I had gotten in time.
I suggest that you print and copy this,
and place it with your other personal emergency files. It may save
you a lot of grief!
* The next time you order checks have
only your initials (instead of first name) and last name put on them.
* If someone takes your checkbook they will not know if you sign your
checks with just your initials or your first name but your bank will
know how you sign your checks.
* When you are writing checks to pay on your credit card accounts,
DO NOT put the complete account number on the "For" line.
Instead, just put the last four numbers. The credit card company knows
the rest of the number and anyone who might be handling your check
as it passes through all the check processing channels won't have
access to it.
* Put your work phone # on your checks instead of your home phone.
* If you have a PO Box use that instead of your home address.
* Never have your SS# printed on your checks (DUH!) you can add it
if it is necessary. But if you have it printed, anyone can get it.
* Place the contents of your wallet on a photocopy machine, do both
sides of each license, credit card, etc., you will know what you had
in your wallet and all of the account numbers and phone numbers to
call and cancel. * Keep the photocopy in a safe place. I also carry
a photocopy of my passport when I travel either here or abroad.
* We've all heard horror stories about fraud that's committed on us
in stealing a name, address, Social Security number, credit cards,
etc. Here’s a story from an attorney with firsthand knowledge
because his wallet was stolen last month. "Within a week, they
(the thieves) ordered an expensive monthly cell phone package, applied
for a VISA credit card, had a credit line approved to buy a Gateway
computer, received a PIN number from DMV to change his driving record
information online, and more".
But here's some critical information
to limit the damage in case this happens to you or someone you know:
1/ We have been told we should cancel
our credit cards immediately. But the key is having the toll free
numbers and your card numbers handy so you know whom to call. Keep
those where you can find them easily.
2/ File a police report immediately in
the jurisdiction where it was stolen, this proves to credit providers
you were diligent, and is a first step toward an investigation (if
there ever is one).
But here's what is perhaps most important:
(I would never even have thought to do this).
3/ Call the three national credit-reporting
organizations immediately to place a fraud alert on your name and
Social Security number. I had never heard of doing that until advised
by a bank that called to tell me an application for credit was made
over the Internet in my name. The alert means any company that checks
your credit knows your information was stolen and they have to contact
you by phone to authorize new credit. Do it immediately you discover
your loss and it will limit the damage! It will stop the thieves dead
in their tracks. The numbers are:
Equifax: 1-800-525-6285
Experian (formerly TRW): 1-888-397-3742
Trans Union: 1-800-680-7289
Social Security Administration (fraud line): 1-800-269-0271
We pass along jokes on the Internet;
we pass along just about everything. Pass this information along.
It could really help someone you care about Have a lovely and safe
summer vacation and remember, many people want your money, but everyone
else wants to know..."What’s in your wallet??"

GUEST SPEAKER
- SEPTEMBER MEETING
We are delighted to have Trina
Vargo as our guest speaker for our September 10th Meeting.
The following is a brief bio on our speaker.
Trina Vargo - President, US – Ireland
Alliance
www.us-irelandalliance.org
The US-Ireland Alliance was created in 1998
by Trina Vargo. Ms. Vargo previously served for eleven years as Foreign
Policy Advisor to Senator Edward M. Kennedy. In 1995, she was recognized
as "the leading expert on Ireland on Capitol Hill" was named
one of Irish America Magazine's "Top 100 Irish Americans."
Working directly with political leaders in Northern Ireland, the Clinton
Administration, and the Irish Government, she served as a key behind-the-scenes
player in the Northern Ireland peace process. In 1999 and 2000, Ms.
Vargo was again named to the "Top 100 Irish Americans" in
recognition of the establishment of the US-Ireland Alliance. Ms. Vargo
graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Pittsburgh with degrees
in Political Science and History. As the recipient of a Rotary International
Fellowship, she attended McGill University in Montreal, where she obtained
an M.A. degree in Political Science
About the US-Ireland Alliance
The US-Ireland Alliance is a proactive, non-partisan, non-profit organization
dedicated to consolidating existing relations between the United States
and Ireland -- North and South -- and building that relationship for
the future.
Based in Washington, D.C., and Dublin, Ireland,
the US-Ireland Alliance includes members from both the United States
and Ireland, representing groups and individuals with a strong interest
in Irish affairs. It educates the American public about the relationship
and is creating a network so that the constituency will have an informed
voice in Washington.
The US-Ireland Alliance ensures that its membership,
the public, officials, educators and the business community on both
sides of the Atlantic are kept fully informed and educated on issues
of mutual interest. Through a series of projects including media, education,
cultural and business opportunities, it is engaged in actively developing
the potential that already exists.
The US-Ireland Alliance has established the George
J. Mitchell Scholarships to educate future American leaders about the
island of Ireland and to provide tomorrow's leaders with an understanding
about, an interest in, and an affinity with, the island from which 44
million Americans claim descent. Approximately 12 scholarships are awarded
each year.

IBO
Mentor Program
Who Mentored You? Thank them...and pass it
on.
Introducing the Irish Business
Organization Mentoring Program …
No one succeeds alone. Behind all successful professionals,
there has been an assortment of individuals who believed in them, inspired
them and encouraged them to advance and accomplish their dreams. Numerous
stories of success are testimony to the long-lasting impact a mentor
can have. At a recent event, actor Martin Sheen reminisced about a Roman
Catholic priest who encouraged him to pursue a theatrical career, and
the rest is history. Later that evening, former basketball star and
U.S. Senator Bill Bradley recalled a fellow basketball player who reminded
him that when he wasn't practicing, someone else was, and gaining an
advantage in the process. He credits that advice with shaping his work
habits to his last days.
The word mentor conjures up many different images –
that of a caring father or mother, a favorite teacher, close friends,
or an older coworker. In its broadest sense, mentoring is about human
service, community involvement, and simple compassion.
These are just some of the ideas that were the genesis
of the IBO Mentoring Program, a new IBO initiative whose mission is
to bring members and professionals together to share business and leadership
skills through a mentoring relationship based on mutual learning and
growth.
Over the spring and summer months, the mentoring committee
reviewed several national mentoring programs and selected the best ingredients
of a select few to form the IBO program. The goal is to launch a miniature
program for members in January 2004 and grow it accordingly. Committee
members will soon be approaching a number of selected individuals to
discern their interest in becoming mentors. The committee is looking
for people who have excelled in their professions by hard work, perseverance,
and, most importantly, the helpful assistance of others.
The basic mentoring categories will be Personal (career
orientated) and Small- Business Mentoring. The committee will, upon
the launch of the program, allow IBO members to request a mentor, and
will endeavor to match the needs of the protégé with the
experience and abilities of a mentor. Areas covered through mentoring
will be professional development, business skills, personal development,
etc; specifically not to be covered are personal/relationship problems,
personal financial problems, asking for business leads, etc. The relationship
between the two parties will be strictly confidential. For small or
medium business management, it will be necessary to have an up-to-date
business plan prepared before entering the mentoring program.
There will be no charge for the mentoring program. The
initial mentoring relationship will be for a fixed term -- probably
three months. This term can be extended for further fixed terms by mutual
agreement and can be ended early if necessary. There will be a brief
orientation session for mentors at the onset of the program.
At some point in the voyage of our lives, most of us
have been affected by individuals who’ve made a difference --
their advice, guidance, and example have helped us to encounter the
world, so why not “thank them and pass it on!” Please stay
tuned as we “fine tune” this initiative and watch out for
more details this fall.

NOTICEBOARD
- The IBO Golf Committee
would like to thank all the players and sponsors who supported the
IBO Golf Outing on Monday, July 21st. On this occasion (third time
lucky!!), the weather did oblige and a great day of golf was had by
all. Congratulations to all the winners and look forward to your participation
again next year.
- While the Blackout of 2003 will be talked about
for years to come – and caused us to reschedule our Summer Event,
the turnout was great on August 23 at Hudson Beach Café in
Riverside Park. Conversation and craic was mighty as we all watched
the sun decline over the Hudson River. Thanks to the Social
Committee for all their work in arranging the event.
- August is the month for weddings, with two
of our members getting married in Ireland later this week. Our congratulations
and best wishes to Maura Kelly and her fiancé,
Mike Pryce who will be getting married in Killarney on August 28 and
Margaret Molly and her beau, Jim O’Sullivan
who will tie the knot on August 29, in Kinnety, Co. Offaly. All the
very best for their future happiness together.
