This Month's Issue:

PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS
Jim Doran, IBO President

As the summer begins to fade into autumn, hopefully our collective thoughts begin to focus on the IBO's Gala Ball, and the many charities we have helped over the years. 2004 will be no exception. The 2004 Annual IBO Gala Ball will be held on October 15th at the New York Hilton. We honor the great works of Brother Curry's National Theatre Workshop of the Handicapped as we present Brother Curry with the Humanitarian Award and we will honor the Pipes and Drums of the NYPD Emerald Society with our Celtic Spirit Award. Our IBO Corporate Member of the Year is Dwyer-Fitzpatrick Allied Management, and Mike Doherty, President of Building Maintenance Service Corporation, will be presented with the Business Person of the Year Award. Both have made major contributions to charities throughout the tri-state area.

Brother Rick Curry, S.J. founded the NTWH almost thirty years ago in New York City. Since then some 5,000 disabled people have been trained in the arts. About six years ago, Brother began a program that included disabled people from Ireland. His selfless dedication to the disabled and the arts is something that we should all celebrate at our Gala Ball.

We hope you will all be there for the special entertainment that will be provided by the NTWH, as well as the Pipes and Drums, which have become such an integral part of our New York Irish heritage

The Gala as well as our other programming will be discussed at the next meeting on September 8th. We hope to see you there

James Doran
President, IBO

IBO MONTHLY MEETINGS

September Meeting
Wednesday, September 8th - 6.30pm
** NOTE NEW START TIME **

Speaker: Chris Winning & Aoife Brosnan of Corporate Care Relocation, Ireland, will introduce their latest property search service. Chris established Corporate Care Relocation (CCR) in 1997, and Aoife joined the team in 2001. CCR provides relocation support, tenancy management and now a property search service to clients on a global basis. This latest service will support Irish & Irish American clients who wish to invest in the booming property market in Ireland.

Guest Speaker : Alasdair McDonnell, Deputy Leader, SDLP, MLA for South Belfast

Dr. Alasdair McDonnell is a Social Democratic & Labour party (SDLP) member of the new Northern Ireland assembly at Stormont in Belfast.

Dr. McDonnell grew up on a farm in the glens of Antrim 50 miles north of Belfast and close to the Giants Causeway. He studied medicine at University College Dublin and qualified as a medical doctor in 1974. He has worked in inner city Belfast since 1974 and spent the last 27 years as a Family Physician working in a very deprived inner city community, doubling as a grassroots leader for that community.

Dr. McDonnell’s political career began as a 17-year-old civil rights activist, while still at high school, in the late 1960’s. A short time later in June 1970 he became the youngest ever candidate to contest an election to the British Parliament, when as a 19 yr old medical student, fighting on a civil rights platform he took on the reactionary Rev. Ian Paisley.

In early 1971, the group that he represented merged with other civil rights activists to form the Social Democratic and Labour Party and he became a key activist in the new party.

Dr. McDonnell returned to Belfast after he finished medical school in Dublin and won a seat on the Belfast city council. Since then he has built South Belfast into one of the SDLP’s strongest power bases, only retiring recently from the city council after 24 years service to concentrate on the Northern Ireland Assembly. In the 2001 Westminster election in South Belfast Mc Donnell came close to unseating the incumbent right wing Unionist Rev. Martin Smyth former head of the Orange Order.

Dr. McDonnell’s passion, energy, vision and ability to rise above the narrow sectarianism and bigotry in Northern Ireland allowed him to build strong working partnerships with political rivals both Unionists and Nationalists in Belfast City Hall. These partnerships, which have done much to lay the foundations for economic reconstruction, have brought benefits to all his constituents regardless of politics or religion.

Alasdair has forged productive economic links and partnerships between Northern Ireland and the eastern seaboard of North America, including the city of Boston, the city of Pittsburgh, and Atlantic Canada

In 1995 McDonnell became the first ever Catholic to be elected Deputy Mayor of Belfast. His superb performance in that office contributed to the trust and goodwill that greatly strengthened Unionist confidence in the then emerging peace process. In Feb 2004 he was elected Deputy Leader of the SDLP.

Alasdair McDonnell is married to educational social worker Olivia Nugent. They have three children, Dervla age 5 ½, Rory 4 years and Oisin 1½ years old. He continues to attend to his medical practice two days per week with the balance of the week and weekends devoted to his constituency (district) and the politics of peace in Northern Ireland.

As some of you already know, I have decided to leave big firm practice and join a longtime friend, Anthony Daniele, in his practice of matrimonial and family law here in Manhattan.
