ADDRESS, James Doran |
|
|
As we begin the Holiday Season--
A Season of sharing and caring--the IBO is proud to dedicate
the last two months of the year to the efforts of the Irish
and Irish-American communities in the overall September
11th recovery effort.
We will hold our regular general membership
meeting on November 13th where we will have James
Martin of the MetroStars. I will also review my trip to
Ireland to attend the European Parliament translators meeting
in Derry.
|
|
On November 21st, a dinner honoring Mike
Carney, Business Manager and President of Local 94[Operating Engineers]
will be held at Moran's Restaurant,103 Washington St. The
dinner will also recognize the special efforts of the Aisling
Irish Center in the recovery effort. Attendance is quite limited
so book now for the special member rate of $100 per person.
Our December Christmas Event will honor
The Irish American Disaster Relief Fund and will be a very special
happening. More details will be forthcoming at our November Monthly
Meeting.
Check out our new redesigned website
www.ibo-ny.com with up to
date information and news on what is happening in the IBO. The
'members only section' will be up and running before the end of
the year and will allow members to access and change their information
details, post notices and renew membership directly from the website.
Our website will now be your information resource for all that
is happening in the IBO.
As we plan for the New Year your Executive Committee
is dedicated to providing our diverse membership with interesting
and useful programming. We encourage all of our members to be
involved with our organization and to encourage others to join
us.

NOLAN'S
NOTIONS
"I
never did a day's work in my life." Thomas Edison said,
"It was all fun." Well, good for him, and all like
him, but would that attitude serve him as well today, as it
did 100 years ago? Probably, and you got to admit it, how much
nicer and more creative it would be to work in an offbeat, welcoming
and creative atmosphere, than perhaps the typical office! Perhaps
that explains why so many people like working from home??
'Course it requires dicipline, and application.
Not everyone can do it. Some people like to mix the two, having
a HQ base at the corporate office and a home office at which
they do most of their work. And then there are those who are
between jobs (seems to be more and more of those!), who work,
or seek work from their home office!. And finally, those who
seem capable of multi-tasking, from many offices! (Mayor Bloomberg,
for instance).
I came across an IBO member lately who fits into
the latter group. Dennis Meehan, who is a Commercial Vehicle
Consultant by day, from his home-office in Hohokus. He is also
a consultant for an African focused hunger-busting charity,
in his spare time. He is a weekend promoter of all things Irish
in the Catskills and also a proslethiser of the Irish Village
concept by volition, and despite all that, found time in the
past year to team up with another IBO member, Jack McGlynn and
make his hobby into a real business.
Jack McGlynn is another multi-tasker, being a
medical professional by day, and providing full ISP services
to the Irish American Community, across the tri-state area via
his website http://www.IrishOne.com
One night in a bar in the Catskills, Jack hears
Dennis talking of his passion for collecting and occasionally
selling antique Mack Trucks. On a whim, Jack challenges Dennis,
and $200 later Dennis is the proud, though non-plussed owner
of his new site http://www.OldMack.com Now 12 months later,
Dennis receives some 3,000 hits a month, and has sold over 50
antique Mack Trucks, all from his home PC. (he had sold only
10 trucks in the previous 8 years).
Dennis Meehan and Thomas Edison have a lot in
common, not the least of which is their passion for enjoying
life! I suppose I should not be envious, anyone can start their
own business! All Dennis needed was a Hobby, an open mind and
an IBO member with the wherewithall to enable it to happen.
Hows about it guys, are there any more OldMacks out there? I
bet there are! Give Dennis a shout anytime, he will help you
take the first step, what have you got to lose! And there are
plenty of IBO members like Jack McGlynn who will he happy to
help!
On another note, given the season,
y'know, voting is a lot like recycling. If you do, or don't
recycle, hey no big deal, your effort on its own does not matter
one whit!? But if everyone does it, or doesn't, then imagine
the outcome. I guess the Democrats among us need to look long
and hard at recycling, candidates and voters!

IBO OCTOBER MEETING REPORT
| Another month, and another
well attended meeting for the IBO. Forty-six members and
sixteen guests were informed about not only the Irish culture
in America but also tips for finding a job in the current
market.
Our first guest speaker was Tim Meagher,
the author of, Inventing Irish America. Mr. Meagher shared
memories of his childhood in Massachusetts and how people
can cling to their ethnicity and yet be so removed from
it at the same time. He mentioned how the Irish traditions
in America have evolved over time and will continue to do
so as the interest in our heritage ebbs and then goes into
high gear again. The topic seemed to hit a cord with many
as a lengthy question and answer session ensued. |

A bevy of beauties plotting strategy at the Oct IBO Meeting.
L to R: Patricia Sheridan,
Frances Browner, Norah Keaney, Sheila Lynott, Patricia McEveney
& Caroline Duggan. |
Our second guest speaker was Randy Mysel who is
a professional career counselor. He spoke briefly on the four
main points to consider when searching for a job. (1) The self-assessment,
(2) The resume, (3) The interview process and (4) The job search
skills. There were again questions from the floor asking for suggestions
and there own personal experiences interviewing.
Coleen Foley surprised the attendees with two
months of minutes for their listening enjoyment. Kevin Tierney
then promoted the golf outing to be held the next day.
Bill Buckley then conducted nominations for the
Executive Committee for the year 2003 as follows:
Nominated for President - Jim Doran
Nominated for First Vice President - Philip McGauran
Nominated for Second Vice President - Eileen Collins
Nominated for Treasurer - Dave O'Brien
Nominated for Secretary - Julia Connelly
Congratulations to our new Executive Committee
members.
Jim Doran announced our upcoming Thanksgiving
dinner at Moran's November 21st. Member cost is $100 and non-member
cost is $175. Our Christmas party date was also announced for
December 11th.
We look forward to seeing as many people at our
next meeting as possible. We have a great momentum going and we
would like to keep it up. I will be ready with my last reading
of the minutes so I hope to see everyone there. (Sarah right up
front as usual!)

CAREER COUNSELING
NETWORKING
- Using people and information effectively to find a job.
- Actively making as many people as possible aware of your
job search.
- Seeking job leads and referrals from these people to prospective
employers
If you are looking for the number
one tool to find a job, networking stands on top by a large margin.
Studies show that 65-70% of all job leads comes from networking.
Networking, again what is it? Or better yet, who is it? It is people
you know and people you don't know. People you know is easy, people
you don't know is even easier. Allow me to give you an example:
Randy is looking for a marketing position; he goes to his local
printer to get his resume printed. The local printer and Randy start
a discussion regarding the job Randy is looking for. This reminded
the printer of his many customers, one of which is looking for a
marketing director. Of course the printer offered the contact to
Randy. Why? If Randy gets the job the printer ultimately benefits.
Notice, that Randy did not know the printer or the person who he
would be contacting, but he did know that he would have a discussion
with the hiring manager because he would be mentioning the printer's
name. The quality of your network is very
important. It is essential to write down a list of people who
you know. Keep in mind that on top of this list should be the
people who could help you the most. But leave no one out. After
you have completed your list, then rate the importance of each
person. Examples of people should be friends, relatives, current
and former coworkers, a previous boss, neighbors, doctors, accountants,
dentist, social contacts through affiliations, people from places
of worship, barber, parents of your children's friends, everyone
you meet could be a potential contact.
Allow me to ask you one final question. Would
it make you happy to know that you were instrumental in helping
someone who needed a job succeed in getting one? If the answer
is yes, you are not alone. Human beings love to help each other;
it is part of our nature. So ask for help, I have never experienced
having a person turn me down when I use these words: "I need
your help."

Aisling Irish Community Center
990 McLean Avenue
Yonkers, NY 10704
Tel: (914) 237 5121
The Aisling Irish Community Center
was founded in 1997 by a group of Irish immigrants to provide
a place that offers help and support with the sometimes-difficult
task of integrating into a new country. It strives to present
a caring face to all Irish immigrants and Irish Americans. It
provides a range of services including pastoral care and counseling,
mother and toddler groups, immigration counseling, job referrals,
information on social services and affordable health insurance.
It also provides a Monday night outreach program to homeless
people in Manhattan.
Sept 11th, 2001 marked a turning
point in the life of the Aisling Irish Center. The disaster
highlighted the tremendous need in the Irish Community in the
Tri-State area for a home base. Aisling Irish Center rose to
the challenge. Counseling sessions were set up for those in
grief and shock. Families in Ireland searching for immigrants
who were estranged from them were comforted and put in contact
if desired wish. In the nights following Sept. 11th, our outreach
groups distributed food and drink to the security personnel
manning the bridges into/out of Manhattan as well the distribution
of blankets, sleeping bags and clothing to those at Ground Zero.
The Compassionate Aid Fund provided financial relief for those
Irish who found themselves out of work and in need of financial
assistance following the disaster.
To acknowledge appreciation for the work and support provided
by the volunteers at the Aisling Irish Community Center to all
Irish immigrants and Irish Americans who suffered after the
Sept.11th tragedy, the Irish Business Organization of New
York is organizing a Benefit Dinner on Nov.21st,2002
for the Aisling Irish Community Center. Guest of Honor
will be Michael Carney, Business Manager & President of
Local 94-94A-94B(Operating Engineers).

DUCHAS
-- The Changing Face of Irish Pubs
By Niall O'Leary,
Architect, Irish dancer and musician
The great Irish tradition of drinking has been
written about and made fun of on countless occasions. Many comedians
make a living from stories about drunken Irishmen, but the reality
is that the Irish race drinks no more than people do from other
countries. What set's us apart is the number of Irish-style drinking
establishments that have always existed wherever the Irish settled.
Over the years many Irish pubs have tried to replicate literally
the traditional Irish cottage scenario, where bottles of strong
substances would be hidden among a clutter of dusty paraphernalia.
Now, however, a new trend is emerging: the sleek, cool, trendy
modern Irish drinking house where discerning imbibers partake
of the famous hospitality in contemporary surroundings, reflecting
the Modern Ireland. Thanks to recent economic prosperity, pub
design in Ireland is leading the way in this innovative look.
Many new bars are starting to open up reflecting this latest trend
from Zanzibar, Prada and Oceans in Dublin to Oasis in Kenmare,
Co. Kerry. No doubt there are many different viewpoints on the
changing face of Irish pubs that will keep the conversation flowing
whether it's the pint of the black stuff or a cosmopolitan!!
Years ago the test of a good dancer was to take
down a door, place a pint of stout in each corner, and dance energetically
on the door without spilling a drop. I have been told that the
best dancer would then get to consume the four pints!
Catch Up with Your Culture
- December 7 a big dance event is happening in the city: The
Manhattan Irish Dance Marathon 2002. Dancers from the Niall
O?Leary School of Irish Dance will be performing in all the
real Irish Pubs in the Big Apple raising funds for costumes
and travel. Have them perform at your local!
- November 26 If you feel like singing, check out the monthly
Singer's Circle presented by Ull Mor CCE, the Manhattan branch
of Comhaltas, at NYU
Glucksman-Ireland House. Featured singer is Monica Beagon from
Co. Monaghan. You can also show up to listen!
- December 16 To hear singing in a more formal setting, go along
to the Irish Arts Center on West 51st St. for a concert by Anuna,
the vocal group from Dublin who supplied singers to Riverdance.
The Center is currently giving a US premiere to 'Poor
Beast in the Rain', a play by Billy Roche about a one-time hell-raiser
who returns to his old hometown igniting tension between those
who need to conform and those who desire to cut loose. It could
be any of us!
- November 27 A World Hunger Year Charity Concert at Connolly's
on 45th St.

listings of what's happening musically around the city, including
sessions, check out www.murphguide.com
