PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS
Please make sure to attend our important November meeting on Wednesday, November 9th -- where Members in Good Standing will participate by voting. If you believe you are a Member in Good Standing and can't attend the meeting, please make sure to cast a vote by absentee ballot (contact our administrator, Clare Bennett to determine if you are a Member in Good Standing or to obtain an absentee ballot).
We will also have a very interesting member profile on November 9th: Ms. Ita Britton, who has a unique occupation as a Professional Clothier for the Tom James Company (please see Ita's Bio below). In addition, Patricia Foley, owner of Celtic Crossroads will have some of her wonderful imported gifts on display and available for sale to any members who would like to get a jump on their Christmas shopping. Patricia has been an active member of the IBO since 1999. Celtic Crossroads is full of unique gift items imported from Ireland (and it's conveniently located in the Lincoln Building, in midtown Manhattan). Let's all support Patricia (and our other IBO members in the retail business) as we do our Holiday shopping.
As we approach the busy Holiday Season, we can all look back with great satisfaction at the wonderful events the IBO has had in recent months. Our September and October meetings were very well attended, as old members and new came out to network and to be inspired by great speakers like Astronaut Scott Kelly, Father Colm Campbell of the NY Irish Center, and Ambassador Tim O'Connor, the new Consul General of Ireland to NY.
Our hats go off to everyone involved with the IBO's 2005 Gala Ball which was held on October 14th at the NY Hilton Hotel. Special thanks go out to our Administrator Clare Bennett -- who organized the Gala, the members of the Gala Ball Committee, our sponsors for the evening, and to the four gentlemen the IBO honored this year:
--Paddy Reilly (The IBO's 2005 Business Person of the Year) -- A great restaurateur and benefactor of the NY Irish Center;
--Eddie Dowling (2005 Entrepreneur of the Year) -- Owner of The Padded Wagon (moving and storage);
--John Dunleavy (2005 Celtic Spirit Award) -- Chairman of the NY St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee;
--William Buckley (2005 IBO Member of the Year / Arthur Clements Award) -- Bill is a gentleman of the highest order, who we all admire and look up to;
Despite the heavy rains (which seemed like they might not end), The Gala Ball was a fantastic night, with more than 325 people in attendance. It was a great feeling to be among so many wonderful people as we mingled, celebrated, and danced the night away in good company. Many thanks to all of our sponsors for the evening and to everyone who advertised in the Dinner Journal. Martin Dunne did a terrific job as MC for the night; as did Consul General Tim O'Connor and Deputy Consul General Gerry Staunton who presented the IBO's awards to our honorees. Father Colm Campbell nearly brought the house down (with laughter and applause) as he started off the evening with an invocation that included man-eating bears and a great punchline. His delivery was impeccable and 100% Irish!
Please continue to think of your fellow members and pass along a lead or call a member you do not know and have lunch). Looking forward, please make sure to come out to our November meeting on November 9th and to the IBO's Christmas Party on December 14th (at Paddy Reilly's "Old Castle" restaurant -- see info below).
I look forward to seeing you all there!
Pat Sheridan
President, IBO-NY

NOVEMBER IBO MEMBER PROFILE Ita C. Britton Professional Clothier Tom James Company
Member Snapshot:
You know how men hate to shop for clothes and they don't have time to shop? Well, Ita goes to their offices so that they never have to take time out to go to the stores. Her client list is as varied as the personalities: business owners, attorneys, hedge-fund managers, commercial real-estate developers, CPA's, doctors and traders.
Ita Britton grew up in a family of 15 kids on the Donegal/Fermanagh border and emigrated to the U.S. in the mid-eighties. For nearly ten years Ita has worked in high-end menswear. She graduated with a BS from the Fashion Institute of Technology, NYC, and in 2004 graduated with an MBA from Zicklin Business School, NYC.
More than just developing wardrobes to suit the customer's needs, tastes and personality, Ita tries to involve him in the process. The magic word is excitement: developing a look for him and engaging him. Ita takes it one step further and teaches her clients to put looks together on their own.
Almost religiously, Ita spends her off-time looking in menswear stores all over, finding out what's selling. Soft tailoring is huge. Stripes make up over half of neckwear, with strong green and mango being the most popular colors. French cuffs have seen a spike in sales. Two button jackets are updated with a higher button position. Three buttons are popular. Center vents are considered more conservative than side vents. Once considered faux pas, brown shoes are popular with navy suits and charcoal suits. Going forward, we'll see higher lapel notches as well as solid colored and textured shirts. Color will continue to be the driving force for accessories. And at long last, the word sexy is coming back into traditional menswear for Spring 2006!
